One of our biggest "fears" about Zach starting school was meals. We were so spoiled at Bright Beginnings and Camai when we could drop the kids off knowing that they were getting a good breakfast, lunch and snacks at daycare. We have become quite organized and efficient with packing our lunches. For Zach, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or hot soup with several sides. These sides are packed each weekend and are ready to go.....cut up peaches, pears, Jell-O, apple sauce, fruit cocktail, peanuts, raisins, etc. Makes the nightly routine of making lunches easy! Toss a few items in the lunch box and we are ready to go!
We also plan a weekly menu and I shop just once a week. It has been nice that everyone is on the same page for what is to be served. We purchased part of a cow with several friends this summer and needed to start using some of it. Between the cow and all the salmon from the Copper River, we haven't purchased meat in quite a while. Tonight, once the kids went to bed, I made breakfast casserole, spaghetti/meat balls, pumpkin spice bread and the lunch items so that Doug will have all the meals ready to microwave when I am in Prudhoe Bay next week. He is so spoiled!

After nap time and dinner we were all feeling good and ready to do something besides hang around the house. So, we got our swim gear on and headed over to H2Oasis. The street was lined with cars, it was to be a popular place on a cold Saturday night. I started to pull in to the main lot next to the entrance just to see if anyone was leaving. Zach starts yelling "Rock Star Parking" which is the code he and Doug have for premium parking spots, especially those at H2Oasis. Yep, there was our "Rock Star Parking"; first stall directly in front of the sign. Rock On!
When we go during the week, we share the place with maybe 15-20 other people. Today was packed, it was actually fun to be part of the large group and the happy energy! We played on the pirate ship, lazy river and wave pool as Sam is to small for the water slides.
Happy kids. They played until they started to turn into prunes.
Sam eventually started to get a little cold and tired. He was content to have a warm shower, dry off, put his pajamas on and sit and watch Zach play for another 15 minutes.
At home, it was another snack - we can't keep the kids full! The kids were then more than happy to head to bed. The best part of H2Oasis is that it wears them out! Zach snuggled in with Nanuk and another favorite, Lego. Lego is a light brown and white dog with a DeKalb winged ear of corn on its belly. Sleep tight!

Doug is out with 8 other guys for the annual "guys weekend". Zach, Sam and I are on our own for the weekend!
All week Zach has continually mentioned that he wanted to go to Chuck E Cheese. It is a place definitely for kids....it is loud, video games, pizza. Well, pizza.....more like cardboard with cheese and pepperoni. The pizza isn't the reason one goes there. I called Sarah and was thrilled when she was up for a play date and sharing the Chuck E Cheese chaos with me. We met Sarah and Jacob at 11:15 am which was perfect. The whole lower level was set-up for multiple birthday parties. We were in and out before they all started.
Sam enjoyed riding in a few of the "rides". Of all the games to play, he really just wanted to play on the slide in the toddler area.
Sarah purchased a pile of game tokens and I got the pizza. I am sure the manager hates to see someone like me coming. I had my coupons ready. $18.99 for 25 tokens, 1 large pizza and 4 drinks. Just enough food for all of us; no thanks on the salad bar, bread sticks, extra tokens, etc. I had also printed out "good kid certificates" for each of the boys. They could turn them in for 10 free tokens each. Hey, don't offer the coupons if you are going to roll your eyes when we go to use them!
The rotating clock, Sam enjoyed it about as much as Zach did when he was this age. He hated it! Can you imagine going around and around on a loud and noisy clock?
Zach and Jacob are definitely into the large video games - Star Wars, Mario Kart, Moose Hunting are a few of the favorites. The boys collected quite a few tickets for their performance which they then turned in for small trinkets on the way out. What a racket, only a place a kid would love. Once a year is good and I am glad that Sarah was there to share the fun with me! We stopped at the grocery store on the way home and then time for naps!

French Class

un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix! Rilke Schule scheduled a special program of French classes. Since Zach already stays after school for Homework Club, we thought he might enjoy a different activity after school twice a week. He is having a great time and learning quite a bit. There are only 8-10 kids signed up so everyone gets a lot of attention and has fun singing and learning songs in French.
Zach likes a Pepsi scarf that we have had for a while. His teacher told him she likes it because it looks like the French flag - stripes of red, white and blue! Now he likes it even more!
I want to drive it!

On Monday night, several of us were returning from the Kuparuk field which is an hour from our camp. It is never a good sight to see a rig move in process. We were very fortunate and caught up with the rig at a road junction; it was stationary and the back log of vehicles held up by it were being routed around. The next morning at 10 am, there it was out side our facility. It is self powered and doesn't move very fast; it moves on the huge type of tires that I saw being built by Bridgestone/Firestone at the Normal, IL plant. The drilling rigs are enormous, after all these years I still like getting a picture of it passing by our flag pole.

Quin's Birthday

Zach's friend from Camai, Quin, was having a birthday party at the South Alaska Club. Doug took him over and was happy to see Pete, Tristan's Dad, there. Pete is also into boating so discussing summer boating trips passed the time quickly.
The kids had a great time playing in the playground area, especially the large ball pit. They then sang Happy Birthday, ate cake and opened gifts.
It was then time for swimming! Zach wore his life jacket, so he could play in the water without Doug having to go in.
